Innovation Description and Benefit:
The Roadkill Observation and Data System (ROaDS) is a geospatial tool that documents wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVCs) on MoDOT roadways, identifying hotspots to guide transportation planning and targeted mitigation for improved safety. Built on Esri’s free ArcGIS platform using Survey123, ROaDS enables field staff and the public to report roadkill and live animal sightings via mobile devices, streamlining data collection and accuracy. Modeled after a proven national framework, ROaDS supports cost-effective strategies that enhance roadway safety, promote habitat connectivity, and standardize data for broader environmental stewardship efforts—aligning with MoDOT’s mission to protect both natural and monetary resources.
