Write Up:

From September to December, MoDOT drivers have done well with the Seatbelt Rule, staying steady at 0.02 rate events per 1,000 miles driven. This calculates to one seatbelt exception per 40,000 miles driven. MoDOT drivers log between 2 to 3 million miles per month. In December, 2.8 million miles were driven.

The Speeding over six miles per hour mph rule stays steady as well, at 0.003 events per 1,000 miles. In December, there were 2.8 million miles driven and only eight speeding violations of six miles per hour over. This calculates to one exception every 350,000 miles driven.

MoDOT employees are doing very well with the speeding over 15 miles per hour rule. There was one exception in October and zero exceptions in November and December. In December, that is zero exceptions in 2.8 million miles driven.

The rate goal for backing when leaving is 10 events per 1,000 miles. For the last three months, MoDOT has held steady at a rate of 15. Looking at 2023, there is a consistency seen of 14 to 15 events per 1,000 miles.

As shown on the safety scorecards, MoDOT is at a low risk for having an incident across the board from passenger cars to dump trucks. When averaging the three different classes together to make one score, MoDOT is at 96.23. That is significant when considering the average score started at 82.1.

Purpose of the Measure:

Wearing seat belts, adhering to posted speed limits, and limiting backing, are the very basics of a safe workplace.  Seat belt use and following the posted speed limits are also Missouri State law.  This measure will track how MoDOT is performing on the very basics of a safe workplace.  This is just one small piece of a much larger effort to ensure every team member goes home safe each and every day.

Measurement and Data Collection:

Using telematics and GPS technology, MoDOT monitors and collects data about seat belt usage and speeding, among other metrics, in MoDOT’s fleet ensuring vehicles are being operated in a safe manner.  This data is used extensively to answer customer questions regarding snow removal and investigate allegations of damage caused by MoDOT fleet.
