26: Enhanced Evaluation of Missouri’s Highway Safety Improvement Program

Submitted by: Central Office - Highway Safety and Traffic

Innovation Description and Benefit:

The Enhanced Evaluation of Missouri’s Highway Safety Improvement Program provides an innovative way to measure MoDOT’s effectiveness at programming projects that will maximize the value of our limited safety funds.  This process utilizes data driven safety analysis to determine the expected number of fatal and serious injury crashes reduced for every dollar of safety funds invested.  The Highway Safety and Traffic Division aids Districts with their review of safety projects during the draft Statewide Transportation Improvement Program phase where the anticipated benefits of safety projects are tracked and reported to MoDOT leadership.  This information is shared with others in various reports, including: STIP Outcomes Report, HS&T Division Tracker, and Focus Document. By implementing a process that enhances our ability to evaluate MoDOT’s performance at programming safety projects, staff will have additional information to better program investments that produce the highest benefits and increase the number of lives saved with the limited safety funds available.  This will result in increased safety on Missouri’s transportation system as well as maximize the return on our safety focused infrastructure improvements.
