Project Summary
The Kansas City District of the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is improving Interstate 70 (I-70) between The Paseo Boulevard and U.S. 40/31st Street, also known as Improve I-70 KC. The project will be administered using the design-build delivery method. Construction will begin in Spring of 2025 with completion scheduled for Spring of 2028.
In 2027, I-70 will close for 11 months between Downtown KC and the Stadiums. More info here: I-70 Closure in 2027 | Missouri Department of Transportation
Planned Improvements
- Add a fourth eastbound I-70 thru lane from Prospect Ave. to the Manchester Ave. bridge
- Replace 15 bridges and rehabilitates another seven bridges
- Improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity throughout the project area
- Reconstruct I-70 from Chestnut Ave. to 18th St. (Benton curve)
- Reconstruct eastbound I-70 from 27th St. to Cypress Ave. (Jackson curve)
- Make improvements to the westbound I-70 near the Jackson Ave. bridge
Project Goals
- Deliver the project within the programmed budget of $237 million by December 31, 2028.
- Implement innovative transportation solutions to improve safety and reliability along the corridor.
- Provide durable and maintainable infrastructure that revives the corridor and aligns with regional development.
- Improve accessibility for the local community and create opportunities to grow a diverse workforce.
- Minimize overall traffic impact during construction in partnership with stakeholders.
