This study will evaluate needs, benefits and costs of converting to interstate status Missouri Routes 171/249 and constructing a roadway in western Jasper and Newton counties.
This project will add turn lanes and a roundabout at eight (8) locations along U.S. Route 60 in Barry and Lawrence counties to reduce the number of serious crashes and improve efficiency of travel for drivers. The highway also will be resurfaced to improve safety and help maintain the highway.
JACKSON COUNTY - The Missouri Department of Transportation Kansas City (MoDOT KC) will hold an open house style meeting to discuss complete pavement reconstruction of Bannister Road (MO W) from State Line Road to Holmes Road. The pavement between State Line Road and Holmes Road has reached the end of its service life and needs to be fully replaced. The project also includes resurfacing Bannister Road (MO W) from Holmes Road to I-435. Project construction is anticipated to start Spring 2027.
The meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 28 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Colonial Presbyterian Church at the South Kansas City campus located at 9500 Wornall Road, KCMO 64114.
The meeting will provide the opportunity for attendees to ask questions, learn more about the project, and leave a comment. MoDOT is committed to providing access to this event for all participants. The Callaway County Route F (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) bridge over U.S. Route 54 in Fulton is slated to have its deck (driving surface) and girders – the superstructure – replaced in 2027. Built in 1968, the bridge's other supporting structures are in good condition, but the deck is deteriorating.
The project will include adding a sidewalk and increasing the clearance underneath the bridge. Current construction plans call for closing Route F with a signed detour.
The four-mile section of U.S. Route 54 between United Road and Gray Road, south of Brazito, has a history of serious and fatal crashes. In the last 10 years, from 2015-2025, there have been 227 crashes resulting in five people losing their lives and 21 people left with serious or debilitating injuries. Of those 227 crashes, 63 percent (143 crashes) occurred in the westbound lanes and 18 percent at intersections.
More than 20,000 vehicles use this section of highway on an average day, which, when coupled with high rates of speed, and multiple intersections and median crossings, poses an increased potential for crashes. In addition, when this section of U.S. 54 was built in 1932, it was a two-lane roadway and when the roadway was expanded, the two westbound lanes stayed on the original alignment, on a curve.
MoDOT is in the planning stages of a project to enhance the safety of this corridor by reducing the number of crossings and realigning the westbound lanes of U.S. 54 to eliminate the curve, while minimizing the impact on people, property, and the environment.
