TIMELINE

Construction activities are expected to start in the Spring of 2027 and last up to approx. 2 years.

TRAFFIC IMPACTS

Several phases of traffic control will be required to complete the pavement reconstruction, particularly at busy intersections.

The existing Bannister Road (MO W) consists of 2-lanes of travel in each direction.  Reconstruction will require:

  • Reducing traffic to one lane in each direction and shifting traffic to allow for pavement reconstruction from Stateline Road to Holmes Road.
  • Various lane closures from Holmes Road to I-435 for pavement resurfacing.

PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT

A public meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 28 from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Colonial Presbyterian Church at the South Kansas City campus located at 9500 Wornall Road, KCMO 64114. The purpose of the meeting will be to review the project scope, proposed traffic control, anticipated construction schedule, and receive public feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will construction interfere with emergency vehicle access?

Emergency vehicles will have access to all properties while the project is under construction. Access will be maintained through all phases of construction and the contractor will notify and work with emergency services during the construction period should any impacts arise.

Will traffic be detoured during construction of the project?

At least one lane of Route W is expected to remain open in each direction while construction is occurring. A couple of weekend closures at Wornall and Holmes and a couple weeks of closure at State Line will be required to facilitate construction.

How will this impact motorists?

The posted speed limit will be reduced during construction. For the rebuild between State Line and Holmes, traffic will be reduced to one lane at all times in each direction during construction. Pavement resurfacing operations will likely be constructed during off-peak hours with lane closures and flaggers.

When will construction begin?

Construction is anticipated to start in summer 2027. Construction activity could extend for 2 years.

How will you maintain traffic and access to my property or business during construction?

Access to properties will be maintained throughout construction. Some locations along this project may be near other improvements on city-maintained roadways. Should the need arise, the contractor(s) will coordinate to minimize traffic conflicts and restrictions to properties.

What is the budget for this project?

The corridor improvements have an approximate budget of $18 million.

Will bridge work at Bannister/71 HWY be complete before this project starts?

Yes.
