Project Summary
The Crawford County Route J bridge over Boone Creek, north of Bourbon, was built in 1950. Over the last 74 years, the bridge has begun to deteriorate, has posted load limits on it, is narrower than modern standards, and needs to be replaced.
Project Progress
A project to replace the bridge is currently being designed by engineers with the Missouri Department of Transportation. The estimated construction and engineering cost for this work is $1,116,000 – subject to change.
A three-week public comment period starts Oct. 8, 2024. Comments can be submitted below. MoDOT plans to host an in-person public meeting for this project and four other upcoming bridge projects in the area. This meeting will take place on Oct. 15, 2024, at the Bourbon Area Community Center located at 575 Elm St., Bourbon, MO 65441.
The project was part of MoDOT's April 2025 letting when contractors submitted competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $615,057.74 contract to Don Schnieders Excavating Company, Inc. at their May 2025 meeting. At that time, a notice to proceed date of June 9, 2025, was given. That is the earliest date the contractor was allowed to begin work.
After construction begins, the contractor will have 50 80 working days to complete the project (as the design progressed, the original expected construction time was extended). By contract, all work must be completed by Dec. 1, 2025.
Route J over Boone Creek is expected to close Aug. 25, 2025, and will be closed for the duration of the work. Closing the bridge allows the contractor to work more efficiently and safely, shortening the time drivers are impacted by the construction while still delivering a high-quality, long-lasting product for the taxpayers of Missouri. A detour will be signed using: North on Route J to Route H. East on Route H to Route 185. South on Route 185 to Alice Street (Sullivan, MO). South on Alice Street to North Service Road. West on North Service Road to Route J. North on Route J to bridge.
Current Condition
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT replacing the bridge?
Built in 1950, the elements and travelers have taken their toll on the bridge. It has deteriorated to the point that it is now considered in poor condition, has load limits imposed on it, and is narrower than current standards.
How will the construction affect traffic?
The bridge will be closed up to 30 80 days during construction and travelers will need to use an alternate route. (As the project went through the design process, the original estimate for construction duration was extended.)
