Project Summary
The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to rehabilitate the Maries County Route AA bridges over the Maries River and Little Maries River, between Argyle and Vienna. Built in the 1960s, both bridge decks have deteriorated to the point of needing replacement, but the supporting structures are in good condition.
The total cost for both bridges, including engineering and construction, is estimated to be $1,702,000 (subject to change).
This project is being let in combination with Missouri Route 42 Bridge Rehabilitation over the Maries River and Fly Creek in Maries County | Missouri Department of Transportation. By contract, only one of the four bridges will be closed at a time, leaving one of the routes open to traffic.
Project Progress
A project to rehabilitate the bridges is currently being designed by the Missouri Department of Transportation and its consultants.
The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's May 2025 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their June 2025 meeting. If the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
For the safety of crews and motorists, and to minimize construction time, the bridges are expected to close during construction at each bridge while the bridge’s deck is removed and replaced. Both bridges will not be closed at the same time.
This project will be let in combination with Missouri Route 42 in Maries County so that these routes are not closed at the same time.
Each bridge will close during its rehabilitation, but only one of the four bridges in the bundle of projects may be closed at a time, according to the contract.
After construction begins, each bridge may close for up to 64 calendar days for the replacement of the bridge deck, but the exact schedule of those closures will not be determined until the contract is awarded.
Construction for all four bridges is expected to begin in mid-2025 and continue through 2026.
Current Bridge Conditions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT closing the Road?
MoDOT strives to be a good steward of the taxpayer money entrusted to us. By closing the roadway at these two bridges, the contractor will be able to work more efficiently – and safely – within a shorter construction period, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing the time period in which construction will affect motorists.
Will the bridges be closed at the same time?
No. By contract, only one bridge may be constructed at a time and both bridges cannot be closed simultaneously.
Will MoDOT direct traffic around the closures using a signed detour?
Yes. A signed detour will be in place over Routes T, P, and U.S. Route 63.
How long will Route AA be closed?
By contract, each bridge may be closed up to 64 calendar days. Combined, Route AA may be closed 128 calendar days.
What is included in the rehabilitation?
The deck of each bridge will be removed and replaced. Each bridge will have new guardrail installed at the corners and new concrete bridge barriers installed.
When is construction expected?
Construction could begin as early as mid-2025 and is expected to continue through 2026.
