Project Summary

The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to rehabilitate the Missouri Route 42 bridges over the Maries River and Fly Creek. Both bridges were built more than 60 years ago and the bridge decks have deteriorated to the point of needing replacement, while the supporting structures remain in good condition.

Maries River Bridge was built in 1963 and the Fly Creek Bridge in 1962.

The total cost for both bridges, including engineering and construction, is estimated to be $1,289,000 (subject to change).

This project is being let in combination with Route AA Bridge Rehabilitation over the Maries River and the Little Maries River in Maries County | Missouri Department of Transportation. By contract, only one of the four bridges will be closed at a time, leaving one of the routes open to traffic.

Project Letting, Award, and Notice to Proceed

The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's May 2025 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their June 2025 meeting. If the contract is awarded, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.

Project Construction, Traffic Impacts, and Completion

For the safety of crews and motorists, and to minimize construction time, the bridges are expected to close during construction at each bridge while the bridge’s deck is removed and replaced. Both bridges will not be closed at the same time.

This project will be let in combination with Maries County Route AA so that these routes are not closed at the same time.

Each bridge will close during its rehabilitation, but only one of the four bridges in the bundle of projects may be closed at a time, according to the contract.

After construction begins, each bridge may close for up to 94 calendar days for the replacement of the bridge deck, but the exact schedule of those closures will not be determined until the contract is awarded.

Construction for all five bridges is expected to begin in mid-2025 and continue through 2026.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is MoDOT closing the Road?

MoDOT strives to be a good steward of the taxpayer money entrusted to us. By closing the roadway at these two bridges, the contractor will be able to work more efficiently – and safely – within a shorter construction period, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing the time period in which construction will affect motorists.

No. By contract, the contractor may not close both bridges at the same time.

Yes. For both bridges a signed detour will be in place over routes V, N, and Missouri 133.

By contract, the Maries River Bridge may be closed up to 94 calendar days, while the Fly Creek Bridge may be closed up to 81 calendar days.

The deck of each bridge will be removed and replaced. Each bridge will have new guardrail installed at the corners and new bridge barriers installed.

Construction could begin as early as mid-2025 and is expected to continue through 2026.
