Improve I-70

The safety and economic prosperity of Missourians depends, in part, on an I-70 that grows along with the state and nation. That’s why the Missouri Department of Transportation is working to improve I-70. Today, many portions of the facility are strained beyond capacity and outdated interchange designs which increase delays and dampen economic activity.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget from the General Assembly and signed into law by the governor provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue for the costs to plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate and repair three lanes in each direction on nearly 200 miles of Interstate 70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville. 

MoDOT has been working on the best plan to be efficient and innovative in how the 200 miles of I-70 will be delivered. As of May 2025, the Improve I-70 individual project limits have been updated and now include eight total project segments across the state. The nearly 200 miles will be broken into various contracts that will be awarded throughout 2029. Total completion of the corridor is anticipated by the end of 2030.

Blue Springs to Odessa

Improve I-70: Blue Springs to Odessa is a $350 million Design-Build project that will add a third lane to each direction on Interstate 70 from just west of MO Route 7 in Blue Springs to approximately MO Route H. Construction began in September 2025 and is anticipated to be complete in late 2028.

Odessa to Concordia

Improve I-70: Odessa to Concordia will be a traditional design-bid-build project that will add a third lane in each direction and replace the existing I-70 pavement between Odessa and Concordia. MoDOT plans to let this project in early 2027. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring/summer 2027 and is anticipated to be completed late 2029.

Concordia to Boonville

Improve I-70: Concordia to Boonville will be a $541 million Design-Build project that will add a third lane in each direction and improve Interstate 70 from Route 23 in Concordia to Route 5 in Boonville. Construction is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027. Anticipated completed is in late 2030.

Improve I-70: Boonville to Rocheport is a $104 million design-bid-build project that will add a third lane to I-70 from Boonville to Rocheport. Construction began in Spring 2026 and is anticipated to be completed by late 2027.

Rocheport to Columbia

Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia is a $441 million Design-Build project that will improve Interstate 70 from the Missouri River Bridge at Rocheport to approximately U.S. Route 63 in Columbia. Construction begins in Spring 2026 and anticipated completion is in late 2029.

Columbia to Kingdom City

Improve I-70 Columbia to Kingdom City is a $426 million Design-Build project that will improve and add a third lane to I-70 between U.S. Route 63 in Columbia to U.S. Route 54 in Kingdom City. Construction began in July 2024 and is anticipated to be completed in late 2027.

Kingdom City to Warrenton

Improve I-70: Kingdom City to Warrenton will be a $581 million Design-Build project that will improve the 44-mile stretch of Interstate 70 from Kingdom City to Warrenton. Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring/Summer 2027 with an anticipated completion in late 2030.

Warrenton to Wentzville

Improve I-70: Warrenton to Wentzville is a $600 million Design-Build project that will improve and add a third lane to I-70 between Warrenton and Wentzville. Construction began in March 2025 and is scheduled for completion in late 2028.

Truck Parking

MoDOT's Improve I-70 Program includes approximately $30 million in INFRA Grant funds to expand availability of truck parking along the I-70 corridor. This project could include improvements at existing truck parking locations in Odessa, Concordia, Boonville, Mineola, and Wright City.

Overall Timeline

MoDOT has designated an overall project team to guide the I-70 work across the state. This website will continue to serve as the information source for updates and public input as the plan for design and construction is developed.

Environmental Documents Updated: 2023-2024

  • Environmental documents have been re-evaluated to identify any changes in the road and its conditions, traffic and environmental impacts since the studies were last completed in the mid 2000s. To view the 2023-2024 updated documents, click here.

Project Development: 2023-2024

  • Project Development involves the design process and determines how the work should be broken into segments. MoDOT has worked with the private sector on plans to sequence project delivery based on traffic impacts and industry capacity to get the best value. 
  • The program has been divided into eight project segments. Additionally, a ninth project to improve and expand the availability of truck parking along the corridor is also been included in the program as part of a federal INFRA grant.

Project Award and Construction: 2024-2030

  • To date, five Improve I-70 projects have been awarded and four are currently under construction across the state.
  • All contracts will be awarded by 2029. Total completion of the corridor is anticipated by the end of 2030, dependent upon contractor and material availability.

Program Goals

The overall goal of the Improve I-70 project across Missouri is “to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound and cost-effective transportation facility that responds to corridor needs as well as expectations of a national interstate.”
Specifically, the focus is on the following:

  • Provide a third lane of travel to eastbound and westbound I-70 from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
  • Improve the interstate while modernizing the existing pavement and bridges.
  • Increase the efficiency of freight movements along I-70.
  • Minimize construction impacts with a focus on work zone safety, communication, and construction staging.
  • Expand a diverse workforce through the creation of jobs.

In addition, the updated analysis of I-70 will include:

  • Transportation Innovation – Upgrade the design to include technology for connectivity, intelligent transportation systems and other emerging transportation innovations.

Governor Parson and the General Assembly have provided a once in a lifetime investment into this critical transportation corridor. These 200 miles of I-70 are some of the first interstate to be built in the country 60 years ago. This is a monumental challenge to deliver, but MoDOT is the transportation expert. Along with our private sector partners in engineering and construction, we will deliver.
