Project Details

MoDOT will be replacing the Interstate 29 twin bridges over 72nd Street beginning in 2023.  These bridges carry six lanes of traffic through Kansas City and have reached the end of their service lives.  We will also be looking into some operational improvements on 72nd Street to help improve traffic flow at this interchange.

This project is scheduled to let in January 2023 with construction beginning in approximately spring or summer of 2023. It is anticipated to be complete by the end of 2023.

This project is projected to cost $6.9 million and is funded through both state and federal funds.

All the construction for this project will be done within existing right-of-way.  No additional property will need to be acquired.

Traffic Impacts

The existing I-29 corridor consists of three through lanes in each direction and will be reduced to two lanes on I-29 in both directions during construction. Crossovers will be used to shift traffic during multiple phases of construction.  72nd Street will be closed to through traffic between the ramps while the pavement under the bridge is being rebuilt. MoDOT's intent for the closure of 72nd Street to be as short as possible during the summer months, while school is not in session. There will also be short closures of 72nd Street for bridge demolition and girder placement. Periodic ramp closures between I-29 and 72nd Street will take place. Alternate routes will be available during the times of road closures. Detour maps are available here.

Bike and Pedestrian Facilities

The proposed typical section for 72nd Street includes 5’ bike lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions, along with a 6’ sidewalk along the eastbound lanes.
