Route 54/63 Bridge Rehabilitations Over the Missouri River

Below are details, resources and news about the rehabilitations of the U.S. Route 54/63 bridges over the Missouri River in Jefferson City. The existing eastbound Route 54/northbound Route 63 bridge was constructed in 1991 and the existing westbound Route 54/southbound Route 63 bridge was constructed in 1955. Each bridge carries approximately 26,000 vehicles per day.

Project Details

When: The project is expected to take place in 2021.

Cost: On February 3, 2021, The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the project to KCI Construction, which submitted the low bid of $4,125,000.

Work Taking Place: Crews will rehabilitate both of the Route 54/63 bridges. These are regular maintenance procedures meant to extend the lives of the bridges. Work on the eastbound bridge will include repairing the deck, expansion joints and piers, and applying an overlay to the driving surface. Work on the westbound bridge will consist of repairing all its piers.

Traffic Impact: Both directions of Route 54/63 will be open to traffic during construction, but there will be nightly lane closures in each direction between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. The Main Street and McCarty Street ramps to eastbound Route 54 will be closed to traffic nightly between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the bridge deck repairs and overlay work. The ramp from Route 50/63 will have a lane closure requiring traffic to merge with eastbound Route 54 traffic. The bridge's pedestrian path will be accessible to the public daily between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. MoDOT will announce the lane closures when a timeline has been established and signs will be installed to alert motorists ahead of time.
