Contractor May Begin Work

The contractor is allowed to begin work in February 2019, though the contractor could ask for an earlier notice to proceed date.

The contractor began survey work on the bridges Monday, June 3. Weather and area flooding have continued to cause delays to the project.

The overflow bridge is currently complete. Work on the main channel bridge is nearly complete. Contractors still need to complete the asphalt approaches, which is highly weather dependent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the road be closed during construction?

  • Neither bridge will be closed during construction.
    • Mussel Fork Bridge: U.S. Route 24 bridge over Mussel Fork River will remain open for  construction as the new bridge will be built on a new alignment to the north of the current bridge, eliminating most of the curvature in the roadway. This new alignment will allow for longer, safer sight distance.
    • Mussel Fork Overflow Bridge: The current structure will be replaced with a culvert along the same alignment. Due to the motorists having to use a 52 mile signed detour route during a closure of the bridge, a plan to construct a one lane, signalized, gravel bypass during the overflow bridge construction was created. Excess fill material from the Mussel Fork Bridge will be utilized to help create the temporary bypass.
  • Traffic will be directed through the work zone by two traffic signals at each bridge location.

What improvements or safety features will the new bridge have?

  • With no overhead truss, the height restrictions for commercial and agricultural vehicles will be eliminated.
  • The roadway will be wider, allowing for wider vehicles, as well.
  • The temporary signals that have been in place for several years, will be removed and two-way traffic will be restored to the roadway.
  • Drainage improvements will assist with the overflow of water during flooding, which may allow the bridge to stay open in flooding situations.
  • The new bridge will eliminate the curvature in the current bridge allowing for longer sight distance.

Will MoDOT have to buy any right of way?

  • Right of way acquisition was necessary due to the realignment of the bridge.
