Project Summary
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is creating a prioritized list of potential safety projects to guide future work along U.S. 50 through 2040.
J-turn construction, turn lane improvements, access management, and potential outer road connectivity may be beneficial along the U.S. 50 corridor between Lone Jack and Sedalia, Missouri (Johnson and Pettis Counties).
MoDOT has already completed previous studies along U.S. 50 to analyze where J-turns would be feasible. J-turns have been built near 1601st Rd and between Missouri Highway 58 and Missouri Business Highway 50. MoDOT will build upon these previous studies and incorporate public feedback to identify areas for improvement and plan for future endeavors.
MoDOT needs to hear from commuters, school transportation providers, emergency responders, freight operators, residents, business owners and others about locations along U.S. 50 where safety improvements may be needed.
Early stakeholder engagement is needed to advance this work to improve safety along the corridor. Three public meetings are planned for November 2026, with additional opportunities for public comment available following the meeting. The public will receive updates on this study as it progresses.
MoDOT is reviewing projects, like this one, that may qualify for future STIP, safety and operational funds. Funding for future projects must be determined before Spring 2027.

Public Involvement
Stakeholder engagement will play a pivotal role in study planning and project implementation. Various public involvement opportunities will be scheduled throughout the study process so stakeholders, community members, commercial drivers, and other interested parties can provide feedback, ask questions, and help identify areas of concern as the study progresses. Public input will help shape what future safety and operational projects look like along the U.S. 50 Corridor in Johnson and Pettis Counties.

J-Turns
What is a J-Turn
The J-turn is an alternative to traditional roadway intersections on a four-lane highway. Instead of motorists crossing fast-moving lanes of traffic to get to the opposing lanes, drivers at a J-turn intersection turn right in the same direction of traffic, merge into the left lane, and then make a u-turn in the direction they intend to travel. Although drivers will have to travel slightly further to get where they want to go, using J-turns can take the same or less time than trying to wait for a safe and appropriate gap to cross traffic.
