About this Project
This project is the replacement of the northbound U.S. 169 bridge over BNSF railroad. While safe to travel on the current bridge is reaching the end of its service life.
This is a very challenging project due to the bridge length, desire to improve horizontal geometry, coordination with outside entities (KCMO, BNSF Railroad, and the NKC Levee District), and tight working areas.
Construction is anticipated to begin the Summer of 2026 following the World Cup and will last for two full years.
Traffic Modifications
Northbound U.S. 169 will be closed during construction of the bridge. Northbound U.S. 169 traffic will be detoured to 9 Highway and Interstate 29/35. Access to the downtown airport will be maintained during construction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does NB U.S. 169 need to be closed during construction?
The tight working area at the project location, surrounding highway system geometry near the project location, and coordination with adjacent partners (KCMO, North Kansas City Levee District, and BNSF Railroad) are driving the need to close the bridge during construction.
Will this project take place after the 2026 World Cup?
Yes, this project will take place after the 2026 World Cup.
Why did this project not take place during the construction of the Buck O'Neil Bridge?
- Buck O’Neil was a cost share effort with KCMO. Funding was limited and from several different sources.
- Construction phasing for the Buck O’Neil project was established to maintain access to the downtown airport. Northbound traffic was maintained during construction of Buck O’Neil. Given the location of our bridge, options to shift traffic to the southbound bridge and back to northbound lane at this bridge location were limited.
