Districts Impacted
The Cole County Route D bridge over North Moreau Creek, just northeast of Lohman, was built in 1965. While the supporting structures are in good condition, the driving surface has deteriorated to a point where deck replacement is necessary.
PROJECT PROGRESS
A project to replace the bridge deck is was designed by engineers with the Missouri Department of Transportation. The improved deck, or driving surface, will extend the functional life of the bridge.
Informational Meeting
An informational open house was held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 26 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 8618 Church Hill Drive in Lohman. The project team was on hand to answer questions from stakeholders and members of the public. Exhibits outlined the work being planned and the detour to be used during construction.
Exhibits
Unable to attend the meeting in person? At the link below, you will find the same exhibits regarding the new bridge deck as were presented at the public meeting.
The project was part of MoDOT's January 2024 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. As part of their February 2024 meeting, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $859,429.95 contract for this work to Gene Haile Excavating, Inc. At that time the contractor was given a Feb. 22, 2024, notice to proceed date - the earliest date they could begin work - and a Dec. 2, 2024, completion date.
Construction crews closed the bridge, built in 1965, on Aug. 12, 2024, to replace the deck. Removing the deck revealed that the beams have deteriorated at the expansion joint. This is likely caused by weather, water, and salt that collected near this area and caused excessive section-loss to the structural steel. Construction crews made the necessary repairs the beams, extending the lifespan of the North Moreau Creek Bridge.
Since the deterioration of the beams was not visible until the deck was removed, this unanticipated work delayed the expected reopening of the bridge by roughly 6 weeks. Construction crews completed all work on Nov. 25.
Throughout the closure, a signed detour was in place directing motorists to use U.S. Route 50, Missouri Route 179, and Cole County Route C.
