Project Progress
This project has been completed as of Oct. 5, 2020. Motorists may see various and short term lane closures for project clean up purposes.
Crews Re-opened the Westbound I-70 Loop Ramp to Southbound I-435 on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.
Crews Re-opened the Eastbound I-70 Loop Ramp to Northbound I-435 on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020.
On Aug. 4, 2020, crews re-opened the eastbound I-70 ramp to Blue Ridge Cutoff.
On Aug. 4, 2020, crews opened the brand new ramp from southbound I-435 to eastbound I-70. This is one of two ramps that make this interchange a partial turbine.
On July 23, 2020, crews opened the brand new ramp from northbound I-435 to westbound I-70. This is one of two ramps that make this interchange a partial turbine.
The weekend of Feb. 21, 2020, crews demolished the old I-435 bridges over I-70. Crews first built the new southbound I-435 bridge over I-70. While construction was being done on the new northbound bridge, motorists (both north and southbound) shared the new southbound I-435 bridge. Crews opened the new northbound bridge in Sept. 2020.
The eastbound I-70 off ramp to Blue Ridge Cutoff has been closed until summer 2020. Motorists needing to access Blue Ridge Cutoff from eastbound I-70 are advised to exit I-70 at 31st Street/US Highway 40 and continue east until intersecting with Blue Ridge Cutoff. This closure will impact fans trying to access Kauffman Stadium.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, crews closed the northbound I-435 ramp to westbound I-70. These ramps were demolished and will be rebuilt in a new configuration scheduled to be complete in summer 2020.
On Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019, crews closed the southbound I-435 ramp to eastbound I-70. These ramps were demolished and will be rebuilt in a new configuration scheduled to be complete in summer 2020.
The westbound I-70 loop to southbound I-435 has been closed until Dec. 2020.
The eastbound I-70 loop to northbound I-435 has been closed until Dec. 2020.
MoDOT officially kicked off construction on March 7, 2019
This project was awarded to Emery Sapp and Sons. Construction will begin in Spring, 2019.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
MoDOT has replaced all of the bridges within the I-435 and I-70 interchange. In addition to the new bridges, crews enhanced the safety of the interchange overall with a new design. This new configuration is a partial turbine and provided an opportunity to make additional safety improvements in a cost-effective manner. Improvements included full bridge replacements, removal of the less traditional left exits, improvements to loop ramp configuration, and congestion relief.
This project was identified as one of the possible improvements to ease congestion and crashes often caused by merging and weaving in the I-70 Environmental Impact Study.
Emery Sapp and Sons was the main contractor on this project. Construction began in March 2019 and was scheduled to be completed by December 2020, but finished in early October 2020.
This is a $47 million project and is fully funded by MoDOT.
How It Works: The new interchange is a partial turbine design. If you're headed northbound along I-435 (blue line), you will be able to exit to eastbound I-70 or loop around to westbound I-70. If you're headed southbound I-435 (green line), you'll be able to exit to westbound I-70 or loop around to eastbound I-70. Similarly, if you're heading westbound on I-70 (yellow line), you can loop around to southbound I-435. Eastbound I-70 (yellow) travelers will be able to loop onto northbound I-435. This new configuration removes the former and less traditional left hand exits providing an overall safer experience.
