The Missouri Department of Transportation is taking action to repair the segments of concrete where quality issues were recently discovered on the 8 miles of eastbound Interstate 44 between Rolla and St. James (Exits 186-195). Initial repairs began this week, while MoDOT continues to discuss plans for the permanent repairs necessary on this stretch of roadway to ensure a quality, long-lasting product for the taxpayers of Missouri.
The preliminary work that began this week includes removing and replacing concrete in the areas with the most significant issues with the goal of restoring eastbound traffic to the normal configuration this fall. Depending on the progress the contractor is able to achieve, that shift could begin as early as the week of Oct. 7, weather permitting.
When the traffic shift is complete, and before winter, the contractor plans resurface the westbound lanes of I-44 in this area. That work will be done as night work with one westbound lane closed between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. and all lanes open during the day.
In 2025, the contractor will return to the eastbound lanes to make the permanent repairs to the remainder of the segments identified during the in-depth analysis of the full 8 miles of concrete placed for the eastbound lanes. The specific details, including type of repairs and traffic control plans, have yet to be determined.
This section is part of a $50.5M, multi-year project began in April 2022. The contract was originally awarded to Lehman Construction LLC, with Capital Paving & Construction taking over the contract in May 2023.
