Caldwell County U.S. Route 36 to close overnight at Hamilton

Route 13 bridge replacement project

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A closure of both east and westbound lanes of Caldwell County U.S. Route 36 under the Route 13 bridge at Hamilton is scheduled to begin tonight, Tuesday, Aug. 8. A project to replace the bridge, led by Capitol Paving and Construction, LLC, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, began in late May.

Beginning at 7 p.m. tonight, Aug. 8, through 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, crews will close U.S. Route 36 east and westbound beneath Route 13 to remove the Route 13 bridge overhang. During the closure, traffic will be directed up and over the on/off ramps at the Route 13 exit. An 18-foot width restriction will be in place.

The old bridge, built in 1958, had been struck multiple times by high-profile vehicles driving underneath on U.S. Route 36. As part of the replacement project, the new bridge superstructure has been designed to increase clearance beneath the bridge to help prevent future damage. The new bridge will also include a pedestrian walkway on the west side. The project is expected to be completed this month.

Due to an ongoing resurfacing project on Route 13 from the southern Hamilton city limits at Mill Creek Road to Route HH in Kingston, traffic wishing to travel south of Hamilton on Route 13 will be directed along a signed detour on U.S. Route 36 to the west, Interstate 35 to the south, and Route 116 to the east to reconnect with Route 13.

Motorists traveling north/south on Route 13 will still be able to use the on/off ramps to access U.S. Route 36 throughout the project.
