MoDOT Began Construction on March 7

MoDOT officially kicked off construction on March 7

Complete
Project Opened for Letting Aug. 2018

This project was awarded to Emery Sapp and Sons. Construction will begin in Spring, 2019.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

MoDOT is replacing the bridges within the I-435 and I-70 interchange. In addition to the new bridges, crews will be enhancing the safety of the interchange overall with a new design. This new configuration will be a partial turbine and provides an opportunity to make additional safety improvements in a cost-effective manner. Improvements include full bridge replacements, removal of the less traditional left exits, improvements to loop ramp configuration, and congestion relief.

This project was identified as one of the possible improvements to ease congestion and crashes often caused by merging and weaving in the I-70 Environmental Impact Study.

Emery Sapp and Sons is the main contractor on this project. Construction began in March 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2020. This is a $47 million project and is fully funded by MoDOT.

DETOUR INFORMATION

*** Please note that these detours will be DIFFERENT on days where the Kansas City Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium. Scroll down for additional details. All other days the following detours will be in place: ***

Crews have CLOSED the westbound I-70 loop ramp to southbound I-435 until approximately December 2020.

  • The signed detour will use westbound I-70 to Manchester to turn around on eastbound I-70 to southbound I-435.

Crews have  CLOSED the eastbound I-70 loop ramp to northbound I-435 until approximately December 2020.

  • The signed detour will use US 40 starting near 31st Street to northbound I-435.

Crews have CLOSED the ramp from southbound I-435 to eastbound I-70. The ramp will remain closed until new structures are built and completed (approximately spring 2020).

  • Motorists needing to access eastbound I-70 from southbound I-435 are advised to take the exit ramp to westbound I-70, proceed to the U.S. 40 Highway exit and turn back east.
    • Through Traffic on Game Days at Arrowhead Stadium: Due to immense traffic anticipated near the stadiums on game days, motorists traveling from southbound I-435 needing to go eastbound on I-70 are still advised to take the exit ramp to westbound I-70, proceed to the U.S. 40 Highway exit and turn back east.
    • Motorists headed to Arrowhead Stadium should utilize our game day detours.

Crews have CLOSED the ramp from northbound I-435 to westbound I-70. The ramp will remain closed until new structures are built and completed (approximately spring 2020).

  • Motorists needing to access westbound I-70 from northbound I-435 are advised to exit Raytown Rd./Stadium Drive, and then turn north and follow Raytown Rd. as it becomes Manchester Trafficway. Motorists should then continue on Manchester Trafficway to U.S. Highway 40. Turn west onto U.S. Highway 40 and follow the detour to the westbound I-70 on-ramp.
    • Through Traffic on Game Days at Arrowhead Stadium:  Due to immense traffic anticipated near the stadiums on game days, motorists needing to access westbound I-70 from northbound I-435 are advised to exit at 23rd Street and make a U-turn under the bridge to southbound I-435.  Motorists should then take the exit from south-bound I-435 to westbound I-70.
    • Motorists headed to Arrowhead Stadium should utilize our game day detours.

GAME DAY IMPACTS

MoDOT Kansas City and the Kansas City Chiefs are working together to make traffic during game days at Arrowhead Stadium as safe and efficient as possible during the construction of the new I-435 and I-70 interchange. In order to accommodate the immense traffic volumes to and from the stadium, NEW detours will be in place on game days only at Arrowhead Stadium during this NFL season.

Fans should note that for the games, ramps from Manchester Trafficway to I-70 will be OPEN. These ramps are currently closed for detour purposes while the new interchange is being constructed.  The detours currently in place (for travelers needing to go from westbound I-70 to southbound I-435 and those needing to go from eastbound I-70 to northbound I-435) will be RETURNED to the current configuration all other days.

Traffic impacts are expected to be significant. Refer to this interactive map to find your best route. For a printable version of the maps and detours, click here. Please review KC Scout cameras at http://www.kcscout.net or consult our real-time traffic partner, WAZE.  All work is weather permitting.
