Since the central corridor between Kingshighway and Jefferson is vibrant and changing, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and its partners want to ensure bridges and interchanges are optimized for modern travel. The first steps were a planning process called a planning and environmental linkages (PEL) study to analyze long term goals for improvements to the corridor.
This study helped create a purpose and need for the National Enviromental Protection Act requirements for future improvements. Understanding the purpose and need, and being able to successfully incorporate those goals and objectives into a NEPA study will allow potential projects to proceed quicker.
During the PEL, the department reached out to the community and stakeholders. Outreach is a significant component in learning how transportation infrastructure affects communities and those that use the roads for travel. The public was brought into the study to help guide the relevant needs, problems, and alternatives into possible solutions. The corridor vision will be developed in collaboration with city authorities, the Missouri Department of Transportation, key stakeholders, community partners, and those who use the corridor.
Developing the conceptual plan for the I-64 corridor between Jefferson and Kingshighway involved taking a number of potential improvements and determining which, potentially could work together. The top three proposals were presented during a public meeting in 2023. Currently, planners are working to combine various elements of those three proposals presented to the public into one conceptual plan.
