Darnell's Ditching Bucket

Submitted by: Southeast District

Innovation Description and Benefit:

This innovation is a ditching bucket for a backhoe that allows you to straddle the ditch and clean it out instead of setting up on the side of the road to clean out the ditch like we have done in the past.  You can buy similar bucket attachments for a backhoe, but they only go to 12” wide at the bottom.  This bucket is 54” wide at the top and 16” wide at the bottom with cutting edges to help cut through the dirt and rock in the ditch that you are trying to clean out.

This innovation saves time by allowing you to clean the ditch by straddling it, making the clean out process twice as fast.  It simplifies work by not having to reshape the ditch after you clean it out since it keeps it in shape with every pass you make, and then is ready for rock or seed after you clean it out.  This also improves safety by removing the backhoe from being out in a lane of traffic and dipping towards traffic and taking away from the side of the ditch the road is on.
