What is the issue with the Edwards Bridge?

Right now the Edwards Bridge is getting older and the department is considering what type of rehabilitation may be appropriate for the bridge at this time. The bridge was constructed in 1972 and was a high priority item for the Hill community at the time to ensure that the community separated by the interstate remained connected. To that end, the city was able to get a Federal appropriation to construct the bridge over the interstate to connect Pattison on the north of the interstate and Shaw on the south. To meet Federal standards, if replaced, the Edwards bridge must be raised nearly two feet to make sure that trucks can safely pass underneath it. Since the bridge must be two feet higher, including the bridge ends at Shaw and Pattison, making it safe to cross  the higher bridge will most likely require retaining walls and significant grading on the south end of the bridge, and will require a steeper slope into the properties that line Pattinson on the north end of the bridge.
