Districts Impacted
As part of this bridge bundle, three Boone County bridges were replaced or improved and downstream work occurred near one culvert :
- Route F bridge over Coon Creek - bridge replacement.
- Route F bridge over Perche Creek - bridge deck replacement.
- Route F culvert over Blaze Creek - downstream scour hole protection.
- Route 124 bridge over Grindstone Creek - bridge surface improvements.
The Coon Creek and Perche Creek bridges, both built in 1953, were in poor condition and had speed limitation for vehicles over certain weights.
The Blaze Creek Bridge is a culvert under the road that was also built in 1953. A downstream scour hole developed, and this project provided some remediation to correct the issue and help prevent scour in the future.
The Grindstone Creek Bridge was replaced in 2019 and received an epoxy polymer wearing surface application as part of this project. This added friction to the bridge deck (driving surface).
Project Milestones
MoDOT's Planning and Design teams identified funding and designed a project to improve four Boone County bridges or culverts as follows.
- Route F over Coon Creek - bridge replacement.
- Route F over Perche Creek - bridge deck replacement.
- Route F over Blaze Creek - downstream scour hole protection.
- Route 124 over Grindstone Creek - bridge surface improvements.
The contract for the bridge project was part of the Dec. 16, 2022, letting when contractors submitted competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the $1,507,275.04 contract to Don Schnieders Excavating Company, Inc. at their Jan. 4, 2023, meeting. The Commission gave the contractor a notice to proceed date of Feb. 6, 2023. This is the earliest date the contractor could begin work.
The contractor and MoDOT have planned the work according to the following schedule:
- Route F over Perche Creek: Closed June 5 - Aug. 9, 2023
- Route 124 over Grindstone Creek: Single-lane closures with flaggers Aug. 3-9, 2023
- Route F over Coon Creek: Aug. 9 - Oct. 23, 2023
- Route F at Blaze Creek: Short-term lane closures with minimal traffic impact expected Oct. 10 - 16, 2023
The contractor anticipates all work will be complete by the end of October 2023. By contract, all work must be completed on or before Dec. 1, 2023, or liquidated damages may be assessed.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Why is MoDOT closing Route F during construction of the Perche Creek and Coon Creek bridges?
A: MoDOT strives to be a good steward of taxpayer money. By closing the roadway at these two bridges, the contractor will be able to work more efficiently within a shorter construction period, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing the time period construction will affect motorists.
Q: Why doesn't MoDOT build a bypass?
A: Based on the cost/benefit ration, building a bypass would not be a prudent use of taxpayer funds.
Q: Will the Perche Creek and Coon Creek bridges be closed at the same time?
A: By contract, only one bridge will be constructed at a time and both bridges cannot be closed simultaneously.
Q: Will MoDOT direct traffic around the closures using a signed detour?
A: A signed detour is not planned at this time for either the closure of the Perche Creek Bridge or the Coon Creek Bridge. Motorists will need to plan an alternate route.
Q: How long will Route F be closed?
A: By contract, the Coon Creek Bridge may be closed for 78 calendar days and the Perche Creek Bridge may be closed for 60 calendar days. The contractor intends to close Route F for the Perche Creek Bridge rehabilitation June 5 - Aug. 3 and for the Coon Creek Bridge replacement Aug. 7 - Oct. 23. All work is weather-dependent, and schedules are subject to change.
Q: Who can I contact if I have further questions?
