Innovation Description and Benefit:

MoDOT has conducted research with Balanced Mix Design (BMD) for asphalt mixtures applying the Cracking Tolerance Index (CTindex), Hamburg Wheel Track (HWT), and Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) performance tests for asphalt mix evaluation.  MoDOT has also used Intelligent Compaction (IC) and Paver-Mounted Thermal Profile Systems (PMTPS) to monitor asphalt placement and compaction efforts on several pilot projects.  With the continuation of these endeavors, MoDOT proposes deployment of BMD, IC, and PMTPS technologies to reduce destructive testing, improve construction practices, and improve the overall asphalt quality.
