Districts Impacted
The I-270 North project is complete!
The Interstate 270 North corridor is a route of local, regional, and national significance carrying over 140,000 vehicles per day. The northern portion of the interstate from I-70 to Route H was built in the 1960s. It serves as a primary freight route for commercial vehicle traffic to bypass the city of St. Louis and is designated on both National Highway Freight and Strategic Highway Networks.
During the I-270 North project, crews reconstructed or rehabilitated pavement and bridges; improved the roadway and interchanges to meet modern highway and safety standards; improved accessibility along and across the corridor for transit users, cyclists, and pedestrians; and made improvements to the interchanges and outer roads of the I-270 North Corridor. Local and state officials cut the ribbon on the corridor in December 2023 when the majority of the new construction was complete.
Construction on the I-270 North Project began in April 2020. The four municipalities along I-270, St. Louis County, Metro transit and countless businesses have worked together to work through the design and construction challenges to complete this project on time and on budget.
"This project not only improves the daily commute of the 140,000 cars and trucks that use I-270, but it elevates this interstate as a major conduit for the state's economy as a freight corridor connecting to manufacturers, suppliers and distributors along Interstate 270," said MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna. "The updates significantly improve the communities and reconnect people's lives along the highway with the addition of improving the highway and its interchanges and outer roads, creating 10 miles of multi-use path and other pedestrian facilities, and building the first dedicated bus lane connecting the North County Transit Center to the St. Louis Community College."
Project goals
The I-270 North project was awarded as a design-build project, which means that the project team's objective is to provide a proposal which best meets the project's stated goals. Goals for the I-270 North project were:
- Deliver the project by December 1, 2023 within the program budget of $278 million.
- Maximize reliability and safety while linking communities for all users.
- Provide a durable and maintainable transportation network making Interstate 270 the conduit for a prosperous region.
- Grow and utilize a diverse workforce.
- Minimize and mitigate impacts to customers through innovation.
