Purpose and Need/What's the Problem?

These six locations along U.S. Route 60 in Newton and Barry counties experience a number of crashes and have been identified for improvements, including turn lanes and roundabouts, to improve safety and efficiency for the traveling public.

Project Information:

Contractor will make intersection improvements at six (6) locations along U.S. Route 60 in Newton and Barry counties:

  • In Newton County
    • Turn lanes at Routes Y/CC
    • Turn lanes at Hammer Road west of I-49
    • Turn lane at Oak Ridge Drive in Neosho
    • Roundabout at Newton County Route HH east of Neosho
    • Turn lanes at Routes M/W east of Granby
  • In Barry County
    • Roundabout at Missouri Route 97 in Barry County near Monett Regional Airport

Frequently Asked Questions:

Will there be road closures during this project?

There are no plans to close U.S. Route 60 during construction of the roundabouts or other intersection improvements. However, Missouri Route 97 will be CLOSED during construction of the roundabout there. Drivers will be directed along a signed detour using Missouri Route 37 and Barry County Route B (see detour map above). No such detour is planned for construction of the roundabout at Newton County Route HH. Drivers are urged to find alternate routes.

Why were roundabouts chosen for this project instead of traffic signals?

Typical signalized intersections have approximately 20-30 conflict points, or spots where vehicles could collide, roundabouts reduce that number to eight. Fewer conflict points, combined with slower speeds and calmer traffic, translate into as much as 76 percent fewer crashes.  Signals also increase the delay of the traveling public due to a signal's cycle time. With a roundabout, an approaching vehicle does not have to come to a complete stop unless there is already a conflicting vehicle inside the roundabout’s circle.

Will semi-trucks, school buses and other large vehicles be able to easily drive through the roundabout?

Yes, most roundabouts are designed with a truck apron to accommodate large vehicles like semi-trucks, school buses, farm equipment, etc.

Why turn lanes at these locations?

Dedicated left- and right-turn lanes are used in situations where traffic volumes and speeds are relatively high and crashes are likely to occur at intersections. Turn lanes are an asset in promoting safety and improved traffic flow.
