Training and Certification

The department intends for all employees to receive the necessary training to perform their jobs and/or prepare them for assuming increased responsibilities. This policy provides guidance for employee training and development in order to maintain a qualified workforce consistent with the needs and mission of the department as stated in the department's Strategic and Business Plans. Supervisors should work with their employees to identify training courses needed for each employee’s position and incorporate this into each employee's performance management plan.

MoDOT will support and develop employees because we believe they are the key to our success. This phrase encompasses the heart and soul of MoDOT’s success. Without talented employees who possess the knowledge and skills needed to perform their work tasks safely, effectively, and efficiently, MoDOT couldn’t be a leader in the state transportation industry.

On a daily basis, MoDOT demonstrates a commitment to the professional development of its employees and expects each employee to receive the technical and professional training needed to do their job while preparing them to assume ever increasing responsibilities. MoDOT practices a lifelong learning philosophy that utilizes a balanced approach to continuously improve its employees’ technical, interpersonal, and supervisory/managerial skills throughout their career progression.

MoDOT offers employees hundreds of professional development courses, including workforce development training, required training, and on-line Computer-based Training (CBT). In addition, MoDOT offers employees the opportunity to continue their higher education by providing a tuition reimbursement program.

For applicable staff, assistance in obtaining and maintaining their certifications and professional licenses is also available.

MoDOT staff, experts from partnering agencies and contractors present MoDOT’s instructor-led training. Examples of available courses include compliance (EEO and sexual harassment training); job-specific training (CADD, safety courses, maintenance equipment operation, and NICET); computer operation (Microsoft Office 2007); continuing education courses for professional engineers, accountants, attorneys, and land surveyors; and workforce development (Learning to Listen, Teambuilding, and Expressing Yourself).
