The Missouri Department of Transportation and the City of Jackson constructed a roundabout at the intersection of Route 61 and Main Street in Jackson.

Roundabouts help reduce stops by allowing vehicles to yield instead of waiting for a traffic light to change—improving efficiency. In addition to helping traffic flow more smoothly, a roundabout will improve safety. Roundabouts have fewer conflict points, or spots where vehicles could collide, than signalized intersections. The reduced number of conflict points, combined with slower speeds and calmer traffic, has been found to reduce the number of severe crashes.

The roundabout was a cost-share project between MoDOT and the City of Jackson. The City of Jackson contributed 50 percent of the cost, with MoDOT contributing the other half. (Each contributing approximately $750,000.) This agreement was reached in 2011.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held Oct. 2016

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at 10 a.m. to celebrate the completion of improvements to the intersection of East Main Street and Hope Street (Route 61) in Jackson, Mo. The ceremony was held at the roundabout and the roadway was completed and open to traffic following the ceremony.

The project included constructing a roundabout at the intersection of East Main Street and Hope Street (Route 61) to help traffic flow more smoothly.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $2,007,816.45 contract for the project in April to Fronabarger Concreters, Inc. Construction began this May with completion anticipated by the end of October. Through a cost-share agreement reached in 2011, the City and MoDOT are splitting the total cost equally.
