What is the main purpose of the project?
The main purpose of this project is to improve safety along Route 367 south of I-270 to the Halls Ferry Circle. Route 367 was recently resurfaced. Some minor resurfacing may be necessary due to changes in lane widths and the addition of median islands/barrier; however, the majority of the job focuses on safety-related improvements.
What is causing the recent increase in crashes and fatalities along the Route 367 corridor south of I-270?
Speeding and reckless driving are major factors in the increase in the number of crashes and fatalities along this segment of the Route 367 corridor.
Please explain the speeding issues you are seeing along the route?
After recent fatalities along the Route 367 corridor south of I-270, MoDOT conducted a second speed study in 2026 to verify what we saw on the original study from 2024. At four different locations along the corridor, MoDOT captured speeds of vehicles. We found that regardless of location and time of day, many vehicles were speeding 20 mph or more over the posted speed limit of 45 mph, including a few vehicles traveling over 100 mph.
Given this increase in crashes and fatalities along the Route 367 corridor south of I-270, will MoDOT accelerate the project to get construction started sooner than the current letting of April 2027?
No, the project will not be accelerated. We have just completed the preliminary design, which took the comments received at the first two public meetings in 2024 to create a proposed design with improvements for the Route 367 project corridor. The next steps include property acquisition for any easements MoDOT needs to construct the project and then the final design in spring 2027. We are holding this third public meeting to get feedback on the proposed improvements, which have been evaluated to provide the best possible solution based upon the current budget of approximately $10 million.
Since the project will not be accelerated, what is MoDOT planning to do temporarily until the project is ready for construction in summer 2027?
MoDOT has and continues to work with law enforcement to encourage compliance with the posted speed of a given route. MoDOT is conducting a Safety Demonstration Project between Country Dr. and Comet Dr. It is a short-term project to evaluate potential road safety improvements in a real-world setting by gathering evidence and building support to inform larger, long-term safety strategies. The demonstration project includes a temporary lane reduction on southbound Route 367 from Country Dr. to Comet Dr. MoDOT will restripe southbound Route 367 to one lane and then install physical barrier between northbound and southbound Route 367.
Will I still have access to Haviland Dr. from southbound Route 367 during this temporary measure?
Yes, Haviland Dr. will remain open but will operate as a right-in/right-out only access. Left turns to and from Haviland Dr. will not be permitted during this temporary measure. Motorists will need to use Country Dr. to the north or Chambers Rd. to the south to make a U‑turn movement.
Will this lane reduction be considered during final design?
MoDOT is interested in hearing the public’s view of the temporary lane reduction measure. Please comment on this setup at either the public meeting; on the website up to two weeks after the public meeting; or by reaching out to MoDOT officials noted on the homepage.
What does MoDOT need from the public regarding this public meeting and to improve safety on the Route 367 project corridor?
We placed a few changeable message signs along the Route 367 corridor asking drivers to work with us and to slow down in order to save lives. This is in addition to the temporary measure to reduce southbound Route 367 to one lane for a short distance south of Country Dr. With that said, MoDOT still needs the public’s help in determining the best path forward so that the future project improves safety and meets the public’s expectations of the corridor. What is the cost of the project?
Approximately $10 million in safety funds are anticipated to be used for safety improvements on the corridor.
During the previous two public meetings, MoDOT was proposing to install a couple of mid-block crossings to help pedestrians cross Route 367. Why are none shown on the current preliminary plan?
MoDOT did consider adding mid-block crossings, but after further consideration given the speeding and reckless driving along the corridor, it was decided to focus on providing a complete ADA/sidewalk path along the east side of Route 367 south of Berwyn Dr. in lieu of mid-block crossings at this time.
