Project Milestones
What is the purpose of this project?
The current westbound bridge structure which previously carried eastbound traffic but was converted to westbound traffic when the new eastbound Daniel Boone bridge was opened in 2015. The westbound bridge, originally opened in 1989, has reached the age when it needs its first major routine rehabilitation to remain safe and operational into the foreseeable future.
Major river crossings like the Boone Bridge are very important to the efficient flow of traffic between St. Louis and St. Charles counties. The westbound bridge carries approximately 50,000 vehicles per day.
How will the work be completed?
Starting in April 2025, weather permitting, crews will split traffic on the eastbound and westbound interstate to complete the bridge rehabilitation.
What are the traffic impacts?
During the project, MoDOT will maintain three through lanes on each direction of I-64, but two of the westbound lanes will be temporarily shifted to the eastbound bridge. A barrier wall will separate both directions of traffic.
To allow the contractor adequate space to work safely, the outside (auxiliary lanes) in both directions will be closed within the work zone limits. Drivers can expect a work zone speed limit of 50 mph, narrowed and shifted lanes through the limits of the work zone. The work zone is anticipated to lead to some backups during peak commuting times, so motorists are encouraged to avoid those times if possible.
Drivers can use the Route 364 Veterans Memorial Bridge to cross between St. Louis and St. Charles counties as an alternate route.
Will the shared use path connecting Katy Trail State Park to Monarch Levee Trail remain open during the bridge work?
During the portion of the bridge painting, the trail will be closed.
What about the work zone for the I-64 widening in St. Charles County?
As part of the Improve I-70 project #2, Interstate 64 in St. Charles County will be widened to three lanes in each direction between Route K and the I-70/I-64/U.S. 61 interchange.
MoDOT and our contractors have been in constant communication focusing on potential impacts of both work zones between from the Boone bridge towards the I-64/I-70/U.S. 61 interchange. Both projects will be coordinated to minimize the traffic impact as much as possible. We anticipate some traffic impacts during the 2025 construction season for both work zones in St. Charles County.
