Planning & Design Phase

MoDOT's Planning and Design team has developed a plan to remove and replace the existing concrete overlay on I-35, construct inside and outside shoulders, and update guardrail. This project also includes resurfacing Route 69 and widening the lanes between the intersection of I-35 and Route 116.

During the first year of construction, 2025, Route 69 will first be widened and resurfaced, then I-35's northbound lanes will be overlayed. During the winter, both lanes of I-35 will be open and normal traffic patterns will resume.

The southbound lanes of I-35 will be overlayed the following construction season. The project is anticipated to be completed by September 1, 2026.

Contract Letting

Contractors may submit competitive bids during MoDOT's scheduled lettings. This project is scheduled to be a part of the October 2024 letting. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will consider all submitted bids at its scheduled monthly meeting in November 2024. If the lowest submitted bid meets all necessary criteria, the MHTC may award contracts at that time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will MoDOT close the road during construction?

Yes, in 2025, the northbound lanes of I-35 will be closed, and traffic will be moved head-to-head in the southbound lanes, one lane in each direction. Route 69 will also be resurfaced in 2025 in preparation for it to be a detour route the following year while the southbound lanes of I-35 are overlayed. In 2026, the I-35 southbound lanes will be closed, and Route 69 will be used as a detour for southbound traffic.

What is the planned detour?

A signed detour will be in place during the construction of the southbound lanes. Motorists will be detoured onto Route 69 at its intersection with I-35 to Route 116 during that time.
