Project Summary
The Gene Field Road Bridge over Interstate 29 in St. Joseph carries approximately 6,500 vehicles per day. The current bridge was built in 1962 and is scheduled to be replaced in 2027. The new bridge will include a decorative form liner and sidewalks on each side, connecting to existing sidewalk on the west side of the bridge.
Project Progress
MoDOT's Planning and Design team is working with consultants from GBA. This phase includes designing the bridge structure, determining traffic control and the detour to be used during construction, right of way acquisition and a public input period.
MoDOT will offer three opportunities to receive community feedback regarding the intersection improvement project:
- An in-person public meeting will be held on Dec. 17, 2025, from 4-6 p.m. at the MoDOT Northwest District Office located at 3602 N. Belt Highway, St. Joseph, MO 64506. This will be an open house style meeting and community members are welcome to drop by anytime between 4-6 p.m. to speak with project experts and provide feedback. No formal presentation will be made.

Contractors may submit competitive bids during MoDOT's scheduled lettings. This project is scheduled to be a part of the Spring 2026 letting.
After the contract is awarded, the contractor will work with MoDOT to determine the exact schedule of work.
