The proposed project includes constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Routes BB and Y in Sikeston, Missouri. Currently, the intersection has stop control on Route BB with traffic on Route Y moving freely.
Roundabouts allow traffic to flow with little to no stopping, resulting in calmer traffic and reducing the likelihood of severe crashes. Signalized intersections have approximately 20-30 conflict points, or spots where vehicles could collide, and roundabouts reduce that number to eight.
Route BB/Route Y Roundabout Construction to Begin
Route BB Closed, Route Y Reduced to One Lane
Work to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route BB and Route Y in Sikeston, Missouri will begin Monday, Dec. 15, weather permitting.
During the first phase, Route BB will be closed south of Route Y, and Route Y will be reduced to one lane with 12-foot width restriction. Temporary traffic signals will be utilized for traffic control, and a signed detour will be in place for Route BB traffic during the closure. Completion of the first phase is anticipated Sunday, March 22, 2026, weather permitting.
Construction will then shift to complete the north side of the new roundabout. Completion of the project in entirety is anticipated in May 2026.
The work zone will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.
Public Meeting Held July 16, 2024
The Missouri Department of Transportation held a public meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 to discuss plans to improve the Route BB/Y intersection in Sikeston, Missouri. The meeting was held at MoDOT’s District Office. The meeting handout, meeting exhibits, and a simulation are included below. Comments were accepted through July 30, 2024.

About Roundabouts
Driving in circles can be a good thing, if it means you get where you want to go quicker and safer. That’s why the Missouri Department of Transportation is using roundabouts as a way to manage traffic at some intersections. This video will help you better understand how to navigate a roundabout, plus explain the many benefits they have compared to traditional traffic signal intersections.
Navigating a Roundabout:
When approaching a roundabout, you will see a dashed white line and a yield sign at each entry point. Slow down, use your turn signal, look for oncoming cars, pedestrians, and bicyclists. When you see a safe opening, proceed into the roundabout. Follow the circle of traffic until you see the road you want to turn onto, then exit out of the roundabout. When entering a roundabout, remember, all vehicles already within the roundabout have the right of way. Do not enter a roundabout if an emergency vehicle is approaching a roundabout. If an emergency vehicle approaches while you are in a roundabout, exit immediately and pull over to the right side of the road. Never turn left when entering a roundabout. When exiting, be sure to use your right turn signal.
