Public input sought on Columbia bridge rehabilitation project

MoDOT to hold public meeting in Columbia and three-week open comment period

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation is seeking community input on a project to replace the northbound bridge deck (driving surface) on Missouri Route 163 (Providence Road) over Hinkson Creek in Columbia. Built in 1968, the supporting structures remain in good condition, but the northbound driving surface is in poor condition and needs replacement.

Public input is essential to help guide the design and construction process. There are multiple ways to comment, question and provide insight: in person, online, by email, and by mail.

The public is invited to attend an open-house style public meeting on ThursdayMay 28, at the General Services Building in Room 131 at the University of Missouri, located at 900 E. Stadium Boulevard in Columbia. Visitors may stop by at any time between 4:3and 6 p.m. to speak with project team members, view exhibits outlining the planned workask questions and leave comments. There will be no formal presentation. Meeting materials will also be available online. MoDOT is committed to providing equal access to this event for all participants. If you need a reasonable accommodation or translation services, please contact MoDOT, TuesdayMay 26 by calling 573-522-5178 or by emailing CDCR@modot.mo.gov, so arrangements can be made.

In addition to the public meeting, there will be a three-week open comment period running May 21 – June 11, 2026. Input may be submitted online through a form on the project webpage (www.modot.org/projects/missouri-route-163-bridge-deck-replacement-over-hinkson-creek-boone-county) emailed to CDCR@modot.mo.gov, or mailed to 1511 Missouri Boulevard, Jefferson City, MO, 65109. All comments must be received or postmarked by June 11, 2026

This project is separate from the Providence Road bridge over Interstate 70. For more information on that project, visit Improve I-70: Rocheport to Columbia | Missouri Department of Transportation.

Providence Road is expected to remain open during construction, with northbound traffic being narrowed to one lane. During construction of the northbound bridge over Hinkson Creek, traffic will be shifted onto the southbound bridge which will carry two lanes of southbound traffic and one lane in northbound traffic.

The southbound bridge is a separate, newer structure built in 1989. Its driving surface is currently in good condition and is not in need of replacement.

More details about the project and all exhibits from the in-person meeting are available here: www.modot.org/projects/missouri-route-163-bridge-deck-replacement-over-hinkson-creek-boone-county.
