Washington County Route 47 bridge project update: delays and progress

Project expected to be complete in mid-January

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The project to rehabilitate the Missouri Route 47 bridge over Mill Creek in Washington County, northeast of Potosi, near Cadet, started in mid-September and has experienced setbacks and delays. A road closure initially expected to last approximately 60 days is now expected to extend into mid-January, doubling the original timeline. This unplanned lengthy closure has impacted local residents, commuters and the region in general, as work moved much slower than anticipated.

However, there is good news this week! Crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation were able to pour the new bridge deck, meaning the project is in the last stages and after the deck cures and some final pieces are put into place, the contractor will be able to open the roadway to all traffic.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $588,737.59 contract to UDT, LLC at their April 2025 meeting to rehabilitate the 60-year old bridge. While the supporting structures are still in good condition, the bridge deck – or driving surface – was in poor condition and needed replaced. As part of the project, a new, wider bridge deck was installed, bridge rails were updated to current standards, and new guardrail was installed at the bridge ends.
