JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – As part of a two-year project rehabilitating multiple bridges in Jefferson City, a portion of U.S. Route 50 over Vetter Lane will narrow to one lane in each direction in early September. Work to replace joint seals, apply a protective coating to the substructure, and repair and overlay the bridge deck will continue through early December. Significant delays are anticipated, particularly during peak travel hours, and motorists are encouraged to plan ahead.
Beginning Sept. 8, construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation will begin to narrow U.S. Route 50 over Vetter Lane to one lane in each direction in a head-to-head configuration. This traffic shift will take place over multiple days and is expected to be fully implemented by Sept. 10. An 12-foot width restriction and reduced speeds will be in place.
In addition to the impacts on U.S. Route 50, Vetter Lane under U.S. Route 50 and two ramps will be closed for the duration of work:
- Clark Avenue ramp onto eastbound U.S. Route 50.
- Eastland Drive ramp onto westbound U.S. Route 50.
All work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.
Traffic delays on U.S. Route 50 could stretch for several miles at peak daily commute times and weekend travelers. Motorists are asked to slow down, use extra caution, and have patience when travelling through the work zone.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted with E & C Bridge, LLC to perform deck repairs and overlays on 11 bridges and to remove one no-longer-used bridge. Traffic control plans include single-lane closures, narrowing traffic in both directions to one lane, ramp closures, and full road closures, dependent on location. All work in this multi-bridge project is expected to be completed by Dec. 1, 2026.
