Alternate routes encouraged for Lake of the Ozark travelers during Jefferson City bridge work

Single-lane traffic began this week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – A short segment of U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, south of Business U.S. 50 (Missouri Boulevard), is now narrowed to one lane in each direction and two ramps in the area are closed. This traffic shift for bridge rehabilitation work is expected to cause significant delays and travelers from outside the area are encouraged to use an alternate route, while local traffic is advised to avoid peak hours, if possible.

The bridges over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard are the first bridges being rehabilitated as part of this multi-bridge project and traffic has been shifted while they are under construction. Contractor crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation have narrowed U.S. Route 54 between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard to one lane in each direction and closed two ramps: Madison Street to westbound U.S. Route 54 and Christy Drive to eastbound U.S. Route 54.

The11-foot width restriction and speed reductions as low as 35 mph are in place. These impacts are expected through mid-October, though incentives have been included in the contract for an earlier completion. While most vehicles – including boats and RVs – are 8-feet, 6-inches, or narrower, anything wider than the legal width of 8-foot-6-inches requires an over-dimension permit from MoDOT’s Motor Carrier Services.

Those who drive U.S. Route 54 between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard as part of their daily commute are advised to avoid peak hours and plan for extra travel time. Those who are traveling to or from the Lake of the Ozarks region, or elsewhere, are encouraged to use an alternate route, which will vary based on the specific starting point and destination. Example alternate routes:

  • North (Moberly, Macon): U.S. Route 63 south to I-70 west to either Missouri Route 5 or Missouri Route 87.
  • Northeast (Hannibal): U.S. Route 61 south to Missouri Route 47 to I-44 to Missouri Route 7.
  • East (St. Louis-region): I-44 to Route 7, or I-44 to U.S. Route 50 to Missouri Route 28 to Route 42.
