UPDATE: Single-lane traffic and ramp closures coming to U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City next week

Missouri Boulevard ramp to westbound U.S. Route 54 to remain open

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is requesting the attention and cooperation of the traveling public in order to keep a heavily-used ramp open during a bridge rehabilitation project in Jefferson City.

Previously, MoDOT announced that beginning May 5, contractors will narrow a short segment of U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, south of Business U.S. 50 (Missouri Boulevard), and close three ramps for construction: Madison Street to westbound U.S. Route 54, Christy Drive to eastbound U.S. Route 54, and Missouri Boulevard to westbound U.S. Route 54.

MoDOT and the contractor are working to restructure the work zone to leave the ramp from Missouri Boulevard ramp open, eliminating the need for a lengthy detour for drivers. But it will require motorists to slow down both on U.S. Route 54 and on the ramp, as drivers will have to merge from Missouri Boulevard into a single lane of traffic on westbound U.S. Route 54. At times, traffic may back-up significantly, or even come to a stop.

The Madison Street and Christy Drive ramps will close, as planned.

An 11-foot width restriction and speed reductions as low as 35 mph will be in place through the work zone. This traffic pattern may remain in place through mid-October, though incentives have been included in the contract for an earlier completion.

The speed reduction and narrowing of U.S. Route 54 to a single lane in each direction is part of the rehabilitation of the bridges over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard, the first in a multi-bridge project across Jefferson City. Work over Stadium Boulevard will be completed one lane at a time, while traffic over Linden Drive will narrow to one lane in each direction in a head-to-head configuration.

Those who drive U.S. Route 54 between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard as part of their daily commute are advised to avoid peak hours and plan for extra travel time.
