Single-lane traffic and ramp closures coming to U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City next week

Off-peak travel and alternate routes recommended

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Starting next week, a short segment of U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, south of Business U.S. 50 (Missouri Boulevard), will narrow to one lane in each direction.

The bridges over Linden Drive and Stadium Boulevard will be the first bridges rehabilitated as part of this multi-bridge project and traffic will need to shift while they are under construction. Contractor crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation plan to begin overnight May 5 to put the pieces in place that will allow for the traffic shift, but it is expected to take a few days before traffic will be moved over. While work on Stadium Boulevard will be completed one lane at a time, work over Linden Drive will require traffic to narrow to one lane in each direction in a head-to-head configuration.

An 11-foot width restriction and speed reductions as low as 35 mph will be in place through the work zone. This traffic pattern may remain in place through mid-October, though incentives have been included in the contract for an earlier completion.

For the safety of motorists and crews, the ramps listed below are scheduled to close May 7 through mid-October:

  • Madison Street to westbound U.S. Route 54.
  • Missouri Boulevard to westbound U.S. Route 54.
  • Christy Drive to eastbound U.S. Route 54.

Those who drive U.S. Route 54 between Missouri Boulevard and Stadium Boulevard as part of their daily commute are advised to avoid peak hours and plan for extra travel time.
