Threatened and Endangered Species class

This course will provide an overview of the regulatory requirements and processes for addressing impacts to state and federal listed protected species. We will describe the roles and responsibilities of the MoDOT specialists that interpret these requirements and are charged with evaluating and documenting impacts of federally funded transportation projects on the natural environment. Participants will also learn the correct methods and timelines for submitting documentation to and requesting assistance from MoDOT T&E specialists, as well as the importance of complying with environmental commitments. Many examples and justifications of Job Special Provisions shall be presented, as well as examples of ecological evaluations.

In regard to threatened and endangered species and sensitive habitats, emphasis will be placed on the proper documentation to submit for a request for environmental services (STIP Design-RES), request for environmental review (LPA-RER), or request/notification for needed evaluation prior to maintenance activity, as well as proper channels to obtain that assistance. At the end of the training, participants should be able to outline the basic environmental processes of coordination (with environmental office), consultation (environmental office to natural resource agencies), commitment (JSPs and environmental documents), and compliance (follow-through for design, construction, maintenance).

Topics covered:

  • How, when, and why to ask for review or assistance (STIP, LPA, and maintenance)
  • Why FHWA, MoDOT, and sponsors must honor environmental commitments
  • Concurrent reviews and clearances needed for NEPA

There are 40 spots available for LPA and Consultants.

Registration is going to be done through MoDOT U.
