MoDOT Holds Public Hearing to Discuss Proposed Roundabout in Jackson

The busy intersection of Route 61 and Main Street in Jackson will soon get an update to help traffic flow more smoothly. The City of Jackson recently accepted the Missouri Department of Transportation's recommendation to construct a roundabout in this location.

A public hearing to discuss the upcoming improvements will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9 in the Missouri Room of Jackson's City Hall. City Hall's Missouri Room is located on the west wing of the building off of North Missouri Street, with parking available at City Hall or along West Main and North Missouri Streets.

"A roundabout will reduce peak traffic waits by about 75 percent, where a traffic light would only improve it by about 60 percent," said Project Manager Eric Krapf.

In addition to improving traffic flow and efficiency, roundabouts improve safety. Roundabouts have fewer conflict points, or spots where vehicles could collide, than signalized intersections. The reduced number of conflict points, combined with slower speeds and calmer traffic, has been found to reduce the number of severe crashes. Severe crashes typically occur with broadside (T-bone) or head on collisions.

"There are also maintenance fees associated with traffic lights that are not necessary with a roundabout," added Krapf.

The project will also include changes to the intersection of Washington Street and High Street.

Right of way acquisition will begin in late summer 2015 or early fall 2015. The project will be let in spring 2016, with construction underway in 2016. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2016.

"With the beginning of right of way acquisition quickly approaching, we hope that any adjacent property owners will be able to join us at the public meeting to learn more about the upcoming project," he said. "This will also give us an opportunity to check in with the local residents to ensure we have addressed any questions or concerns with the upcoming project."

During work, bypasses will be in place through staging phases. Periodic, short duration closures will occur through the course of the project as the legs of the roundabout are tied into the existing pavement.
