Public Hearing to Discuss Fruitland Rest Area Conversion

SIKESTON- The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing to discuss converting the Fruitland Rest Areas to commercial vehicle parking.  The meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Osage Center, located at 1625 North Kingshighway in Cape Girardeau.

The meeting will have an open-house format, so visitors can stop by to talk one-on-one with a member of the project team anytime between 4 and 6 p.m.  No formal presentation will be given.

The project involves demolition of each rest area facility and construction of commercial vehicle parking, including a vault-type restroom.

"There are a number of reasons we are looking to convert this location to truck parking," says Project Manager Eric Krapf. "Outdated facilities, the cost of upkeep and cleaning of the facilities and limited truck parking are three major reasons to convert this location."
