JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – The closure of the Cole County Route D bridge over North Moreau Creek will be extended by several weeks. This is due to unanticipated work needed to repair deteriorated structural steel that was not visible until the existing deck was removed.
Construction crews closed the bridge, built in 1965, on Aug. 12, 2024, to replace the deck. Removing the deck revealed that the beams have deteriorated at the expansion joint. This is likely due to weather, water, and salt that collected near this area and caused excessive section loss to the structural steel. Construction crews will make the necessary repairs to the beams, extending the lifespan of the North Moreau Creek Bridge.
Since the deterioration of the beams was not visible until the deck was removed, this unanticipated work will delay the expected reopening of the bridge by roughly 6 weeks. Construction crews now anticipate completing all work by late November.
Throughout this extended closure, a signed detour will continue to be in place directing motorists to use U.S. Route 50, Missouri Route 179, and Cole County Route C.
