PLATTE COUNTY – Crews are replacing the Interstate 29 twin bridges over 72nd Street. Crews will be constructing median crossovers as part of the bridge replacement and it will require the following traffic changes beginning on Saturday, March 25. Motorists are advised to plan ahead, leave early, and consider alternate routes if necessary as there could be delays in the area. All work is weather permitting.
- Beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, crews will CLOSE TWO LANES along both northbound and southbound I-29 at 72nd Street. This will reduce the area to ONE LANE until Sunday, March 26 when work is completed.
- Beginning Sunday, March 26, there will be one lane closed in each direction in the area for median crossover construction, until approximately late April 2023.
After the NFL Draft, crews will shift traffic to one side of the bridge with head to head traffic. More details about this will be announced soon.
The I-29 twin bridges over 72nd Street carry six lanes of traffic through Kansas City and are nearing the end of their service lives necessitating the replacement. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. For more information about this project, visit the project webpage.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
