Multiple Work Zones to Impact Interstate 44 In August

Motorists Advised to Prepare for Delays in Each Work Zone

JEFFERSON CITY – Motorists traveling through the central part of the state on Interstate 44 will experience lane closures and significant delays during the month of August, as multiple work zones are in place.

“We are asking anyone who might utilize I-44 in Phelps and Pulaski counties to plan their travels in advance,” said MoDOT Central District Assistant District Engineer Randy Aulbur. “With a lane closure in each of the work zones, we are expecting traffic flow to be impacted significantly. To help alleviate some of these delays, we ask those traveling on I-44 to consider using alternate routes, or prepare extra time for expected delays.”

Among the projects along the interstate are the ongoing improvements in Phelps and Crawford counties. Beginning Wednesday, August 3, contractors will begin pavement repairs and replacement along the westbound lanes between the Rolla city limits and Sugar Tree Road. One westbound lane will be closed with a concrete traffic barrier in place 24 hours a day for up to 90 days.

In addition, contractors are continuing a project to improve the eastbound and westbound I-44 bridges over Trophy Lane east of St. Robert. One lane is closed in each direction at these bridges.

On Monday, August 8, repairs will begin on the Route 17 bridge west of Waynesville. That repair work will require the closure of the Route 17 bridge, along with the eastbound lanes of Interstate 44, between 7 p.m. and 6:30 a.m. for two weeks. Detours will be in place for Route 17 traffic, while eastbound I-44 traffic will be diverted through the work zone via the exit and entrance ramps at the interchange. The bridge and the interstate will be open during the daylight hours. That work is scheduled for completion by August 25.

Also on Monday, August 8, contractors will begin the replacement of the deck of the Route U bridge over I-44 east of St. James. Work will take place during the overnight hours until August 15, at which time the work will move to daytime hours. One eastbound and one westbound lane of I-44 will be closed at the overpass. The work will be completed by late November.

Aulbur advises motorists to plan your travel by checking MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at, or by downloading the app onto your phone.

MoDOT will update motorists on the status of each work zone through digital signs on the road, social media, and the Traveler Information Map. MoDOT appreciates the patience of motorists and encourages all drivers to stay focused on the road, obey all traffic signs, and watch for workers on the road.
