Important notice for All recipients of federal funds:
Implementation of Unique Entity Identifier
PURPOSE: To provide information on the implementation timeline for the Unique Entity Identifier (UEI) transition.
BACKGROUND:
In April 2022, the Federal government will stop using the Data Universal Numbering System (DUNS) to uniquely identify entities registered in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov). At that point, entities doing business with the Federal government will use a UEI created in SAM.gov, and they will no longer have to go to a third-party website to obtain their identifier. This transition will streamline the entity identification and validation process, making it easier and less burdensome for entities to do business with the Federal government. The DUNS number will remain the official identifier through April 3, 2022, to allow interfacing systems time to transition.
INFORMATION:
The DUNS Number will be replaced by a new identifier called the UEI, which is requested in and assigned by SAM.gov.
- Active registrants in SAM.gov will have their UEI automatically assigned and viewable within SAM.gov; there is no action for registered entities to take at this time in order to obtain their UEI.
- The transition to using the SAM-generated UEI must be tested and completed before April 4, 2022. Additional information about this change can be found at the General Services Administration’s UEI Transition Website and in the attached Unique Entity Identifier (SAM) documents.
- The November 18, 2021 presentation on UEI can be found at Innovation Exchange (cfo.gov).
