Southwest District – The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission today selected The ESS Team to improve 25 bridges within 15 miles of I-44 across the Southwest District, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
There are 25 bridges in the bundle with seven (7) mainline I-44 bridges, five (5) I-44 overpass bridges and the remaining on adjacent routes over various features.
The project is in line with Gov. Parson’s commitment to focus on taking care of Missouri’s vital infrastructure.
There are approximately 10,400 bridges on the state’s highway system. Nearly 840 of them are rated as “poor” by the Federal Highway Administration.
Four teams vied for the opportunity to design and build I-44 Corridor Bridge Bundle, as it’s being called. 16 bridges will be replaced and 9 bridges will receive major rehabilitation work.
The ESS Team is a partnership of engineering and construction firms that will design and construct the project with oversight by MoDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
ESS Team members are:
- Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. – Columbia
- Parsons Transportation Group, Inc. – St. Louis
Construction of the $38.5 million project is scheduled to begin in late spring or early summer of 2022 with completion in the fall of 2024.

This will be the 21st design-build project for MoDOT since the contract for The New I-64 in St. Louis was awarded in the fall of 2006.
