MoDOT Utility Work to Begin in Columbia Next Week

COLUMBIA – Motorists in Columbia may see short-term lane closures on state routes in the coming months as part of a project to improve Missouri Department of Transportation traffic signal connectivity.

A contractor working for MoDOT will be upgrading MoDOT fiber lines that connect traffic signals on state routes across the city. The upgrade will allow these signals to better communicate with each other. This will allow for improved signal timing and traffic flow. It will also help MoDOT respond in a timelier manner to signal issues, allowing crews to trouble shoot, monitor and make timing adjustments remotely in real time.

Crews are expected to start the project at the intersection of Stadium Blvd. and Broadway on Monday, June 22. This work could require various temporary lane and sidewalk closures along state routes for several months. Signs will guide motorists through the work zones and pedestrians are asked to find alternate routes.

Motorists are asked to slow down and watch for crews in work zones. MoDOT says they appreciate the patience of travelers while the work takes place. Additional information will be provided as the work progresses.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of December.

This work is weather permitting and could be delayed.
