ROCK PORT, MO. – Motorists in Atchison County and our neighbors to the west in Nebraska are singing the Willie Nelson classic “On the Road Again.” After 217 days of closure due to flooding, damage, repair, reflooding, and more repair, U.S. Route 136 from Interstate 29 to the Missouri River is now open, including the bridge at Phelps City and the Brownville Bridge.
The route was closed due to flooding on March 15, 2019. Crews from Phillips Hardy Inc., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, spent approximately 60 days removing debris and completing extensive roadway repairs on this stretch of highway. This includes a work stoppage when floodwaters rose again and a week’s hiatus while a temporary bridge was removed. Their full-scale repair efforts have been non-stop since Aug. 26 filling two large areas where the roadbed had washed away, resurfacing, and repairing the approaches at the bridge near Phelps City.
Several routes in Atchison, Buchanan, Carroll and Holt counties still have water over them, including U.S. Route 159 (Holt), U.S. Route 59 (Buchanan) and U.S. Route 65 (Carroll).
